REPOSITIONING FOR RELEVANCE

In 2015, a new seven-story building with 88 spacious new apartments, plus a new Cultural Arts Center and a host of other wonderful amenities were completed. Whitney Center has been able to develop its programs around the active lifestyle and eagerness for continued learning and growth opportunities of its residents. Integration of the existing building to the new expansion was a major design and project goal. The new common spaces connect the independent living expansion to the existing community. Residents from healthcare, assisted living, and independent living are able to experience the wealth of amenities with family, friends, visitors, and staff.

COMMUNITY WITHIN COMMUNITY

‍The new Main Street connector is a glass-enclosed promenade, boasting beautiful natural light and views of the outdoors and campus grounds. Along the Main Street is an Art Gallery, open to the public three days a week. The gallery allows for exhibits curated by the Arts Council of Greater New Haven and exhibits of original artwork by Whitney Center residents curated by the Resident Art Gallery Committee.

GREEN GOALS

Producing an environmentally friendly solution was inspired by the residents. With a nature preserve and water reservoir adjoining the back of the community, complete with wild turkeys and single family homes nearby, preserving green space and enhancing the natural beauty of the surroundings were purposeful endeavors. Outdoor walking trails, terraces, a dining patio, green roof, and water feature are all new to the landscape at Whitney Center. A checkerboard patterned green roof adds visual interest from the new apartment tower as well as sustainable qualities. Newly renovated common spaces bring in natural light and attract attention to the outdoors with glass walls along main street and the formal dining corridor.
