Flexible Design for Forensic Science

WESTERN DEPARTMENT OF FORENSIC SCIENCE LABORATORY AND OFFICE OF CHIEF MEDICAL EXAMINER

TRANSFORMING SPACE WITH INNOVATIVE DESIGN

This expansion and renovation to the Western Laboratory of the Department of Forensic Science (DFS) and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner (OCME) consists of a 62,000 GSF three-story addition and a 57,000 GSF two-story renovation. The expansion took advantage of site elevation changes to create a new ground level training suite that is shared by both agencies and accessible to other state agencies for training events.

CREATING CONNECTION

Both agencies need clear separation from the public and from each other, but they also require spaces for collaboration. The design throughout the building promotes connection and efficiency through shared spaces and a large, central collaborative break/common area that inspires interaction and knowledge sharing.
