For the past several years, SFCS has sponsored a studio at Virginia Tech to mentor students, help develop their innovative ideas and give them real world experience in product design. By Design 2024, SFCS’ annual senior living conference, showcased groundbreaking solutions designed by these students, tailored specifically for older adults. One of the standout innovations presented at the conference was the Rock’n’Stop rocking chair. This innovative chair features stops on the front, ensuring stability and safety for seniors as they enjoy the soothing motion of rocking. With ADA-compliant arms, the Rock’n’Stop chair offers both comfort and accessibility.

The Tempo system introduces a new era of kitchen safety for seniors. Utilizing low-frequency Bluetooth technology, Tempo connects to kitchen appliances such as ovens, offering advanced features like motion detection, fire prevention, and auto-shut off when the stove is left on. Seniors can control their oven remotely through a smartphone app, ensuring peace of mind and preventing accidents.

The Hole in One game reimagines the classic corn hole experience with seniors in mind. Featuring a specially designed board, this senior-friendly version of corn hole provides stability for players as they throw, minimizing the risk of falls. Additionally, the back panel design makes it easy for seniors to retrieve their bean bags, enhancing both safety and enjoyment.

This device connects to a smartphone app, allowing users to send personalized songs to their elderly relatives.
